Hamnoy in Lofoten – The Most Breathtaking Fishing Village

Hamnoy is the oldest fishing village. It is small, but unbelievably beautiful. Considered to be one of the most picturesque village of Moskenes ,it is also a popular tourist destination due to its scenic beauty. You can visit the place all year round – there are no extreme changes in temperature, except for the polar night, which takes place in winter.

Where to Stay In Hamnoy

In the original fishermen cabins are used by visitors for stay. The the oldest cabin is from the 1890s. It is well equipped with all the modern facilities Rorbuer are the traditional red fisherman cabins that dot the islands. One end of these cabin is firmly planted on land, the other end suspended by polls in the water. Some of the rorbuer are still used by fisherman in Lofoten and the others are used to rent out to tourists. ‘Eliassen Rorbuer’ is the oldest fishermen cabin village in Lofoten. Though the cabins are still named after the original fishermen that used to call them home. Eliassen Rorbuer is just a fifteen-minute bike ride from Reine, said to be one of the ‘most beautiful places in the world’. Hamnøy is a magnet for photographers.One can even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights .

Hamnoy provides relatively plenty of fun outdoor as well as cultural activities. Cod fishing season begins in winter, although it is really dark from December to February. You can get yourself involved in mountain trekking, Nordic walking, cycling, Arctic surfing, sea rafting, fishing trips, winter sports and interactive encounters with the local culture by visiting fascinating museums and galleries.

The annual Feelgood Jazzfest is a tribute to the wild and wonderful Lofoten countryside and culture, together with the involvement and spontaneous creativity.It is organised in the month of May.
